Our 15th annual Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee was held at the FirstOntario Arts Centre in Milton on May 19th. We had a wonderful turnout of local residents and employees of local organizations who came out to have some fun in support of adult literacy and the Adult Learning Centre – Literacy North Halton. Eleven teams challenged each other to a test of their spelling prowess and dressed in their spelling best as their supporters cheered them on. The competition between the various local Public Library teams heated up and we all want to know – where did the Milton team get those fancy bee clappers?
The Fortune Spellers won this year’s event with the word:
cleome - a plant of a chiefly tropical genus that includes the spider flower. Cleomes are noted for their long stamens.
Thank you to the Royal Bank, Georgetown Main Street Branch for being our major sponsor of the event. Also thank you to the team sponsors: iPro Realty, Acton Tire Shop, Cheryl Watkin-Life Coach, Georgetown Wordsmiths, Milton Public Library, Mohawk Inn & Conference Centre, Paul C. Armstrong Insurance Brokers Inc., and Royal Lepage Meadowtowne Realty Brokerage. We also truly appreciate the support from our many other sponsors and donors!
We look forward to seeing you at our Scrabble® for Literacy event in January 2019.
